This is certainly a period piece, but in more ways than Nintendo may have intended. It's not Sakura Samurai's core gameplay, which is quite fun and rewarding, that's causing me to not want to go back it's that the prospect of sinking time into a game without getting anywhere is significantly less appealing these days. You travel the land, slicing up gangs of ronin and rival lords who, as helpfully as in the movies, always choose to attack you one at a time even though they are in a big circle all around you. Like many Japanese films and a not-inconsiderable selection of games, Sakura Samurai (pictured above) falls neatly into the jidaigeki genre of swordfights and samurai. While the platform, about to celebrate its first birthday this month, can play the hundreds of downloadable games released for the regular DS console as well as re-releases of black-and-white Game Boy games for $3 and $4 each, it didn't have much in the way of full-fledged digital titles that use its glasses-free 3-D display until recently.
